What is jiu jitsu? Many practitioners refer to jiu jitsu as a lifestyle. More than just a martial art or sport, but an all encompassing way of life. It is also a familiar term to hear people in the jiu jitsu community say, “Ju Jitsu is for everyone!” This is partly due to the fact that kids and grandparents can all practice and benefit from this amazing art.
So when one of my young student’s parents asked me the other day, “What is Jiu Jitsu?” I replied, “it’s something different for everybody you see.” For me it’s a way of life. For some it’s to allow their children to partake an activity that is mentally and physically challenging and that will build confidence and self discipline over time. On the other hand, for our students over 50 years of age its to help them stay active and stress free. There is, however, many benefits that all practitioners of the art will experience if they attend class regularly. These include:
- Self Defense Skills
- Structured Lifestyle
- Stress Relief
- Weight Control
- Goal Setting
- Strong Cardio and Flexibility
- Self Confidence
what is jiu jitsu? Part 1
The martial art has been proven to be the most effective to date and has been proven time and time again in self defense situations and competitions such as the UFC or Ultimate Fighting Championship. The self defense aspects of jiu jitsu are perfect for women who need to ward off an attacker and also for your child to have the self confidence to stand up to the playground bully. Jiu Jitsu was built on the foundation that a weaker smaller person can overcome a bigger stronger oppenent by using techniques with the proper mechanics and leverages. They say “90% of street fights end up on the ground!” Luckily Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art that focuses on dealing with opponents on the ground. If you or your family is attacked, you will need the tools to defend the people you care about. So when a person comes into your academy and says, “what is jiu jitsu?” You will have to explain to them the full range of how the martial art will impact their life and overall piece of mind.
What is Jiu Jitsu? Part 2
For some, the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle leads to competition in Octagons and Tournaments. Many practitioners like the challenge of competing and knowing they will progress faster as a result of having their weaknesses exposed. Almost all jiu jitsu academies have competition teams for kids and adults. Grappling and Jiu Jitsu Tournaments are a safe way for kids and adults to test their skill set in a controlled environment. Kids and Adults will learn a lot about themselves when they compete in jiu jitsu. You get to see how a student deals with pressure and an exciting situation. You also get to see how a competitor deals with rebounding from defeat. Plus it’s an individual competition format that counts towards the overall teams points.
